WOODTURNER
Andrei Khabad
Originally from a part of the world where the ancient boreal forests still exist, Andrei developed a passion for forests and trees, which as a child he called the silent giants, during his countless hikes.
50 years later, 75 trips around the world later, 170 documentaries, reports and short films as a cameraman later, he returns to his roots by turning away from cinematographic shootings to woodturning.
Andrei loves working with local species: maple, ash, elm, walnut, birch... His hikes in the forest are now an opportunity to discover and bring back to his workshop, tree stumps to which he gives new life.
Most of the wood pieces he transforms are recovered directly from the streets or suburbs of Montreal!
"Woodturning is a puzzle until the very last stages. Wood often speaks for itself, suggesting character, shape, effect of a future vessel..
The woodturner must simply listen and follow.
My approach?
I am listening... "
